“I came to New York after WWII. At Queens College and N.Y.U. I studied Russian Literature, Psychology, Philosophy and Art. Later I earned an MS and Ph.d. in Clinical Psychology at Western Reserve University. As a graduate student I started my studies and therapy with Erving Polster, Fritz and Laura Perls, Virginia Satir and others. I see myself mainly as a phenomenologist of sensation, passion and aesthetics. I am a painter and I love poetry. In 1976 I published “Creative Process in Gestalt Therapy”. the book was translated into many languages and is still published by Random House. I am also the author of “Rosa Lee”, (now out of print), “In Search of Good Form”, and “Sketches” (2001). I am a passionate teacher of therapists, especially dealing with art, creative movement and creative experiment. “Gestalt therapy is not the routine repetition of stale prayers at sundown. For me it stands for all that is in front of me, for all that promises completeness of experiencing, for the things to come which are awesome, frightening, tearful, moving, unfamiliar, archetypal, growthful. For me it means the full embrace of life – savoring of all its subtle tastes.” Joseph Zinker, Sketches, Analytic Press, 2001. PS: A recent reviewer of “Sketches” (from book Watch, march 2002) wrote in part… “a selection of dialogues presents the readers with samples of the Gestalt Psychological treatment in practice, and the Sketches and Verses of Poetry are memorable in their fragile simplicity. a fine and insightful book for anyone with dual interests in gestalt practice and the arts, Sketches is recommended reading for students of Clinical Psychology in general, and Gestalt Psychotherapy in particular.”
